I had just met the man of my dreams. He was so perfect for me that I left my boyfriend of 7 years (and fiancé) for him.
And then I got the call that I had been waiting for – a job had opened up in Boston at a startup and it was time for me to move.
I was in the car the next day.
He helped me pack.
And he thought and thought and thought. And he stayed in Florida, and tried to keep his career going there, but he missed me.
So he married me…
But wasn’t quite ready to give up his career (even though I dropped everything in a heartbeat for mine.)
He kept moving closer, over 3 years, not quite reaching Boston, visiting on weekends, until finally he’d had enough and realized I was more important than his career.
13 years later, he does harbor a bit of regret – not resentment toward me, but regret that he couldn’t be as strong and make the relationship and career both work. He wanted both, and couldn’t have it, but I could.
Not everyone can. It’s a very personal thing. Everyone is different – you’ll have to decide for yourself.
