I have seen plenty of people who quit their jobs to work on a startup before it generated any revenue. I myself didn’t get paid for an entire year while working on one, and that led directly to my being tapped to be an early employee at Evernote.
The key is: you do need to be able to support your company and yourself somehow. If you don’t have funding, savings, friends who will work for free an excellent knack for extreme couponing or SOMETHING then you will need to have some means of support in the early days. The sooner you can dedicate all your time to your new company though the better.
