The transition from “Engineer” to “CTO” can be difficult.
All that awesome stuff like writing code and fixing bugs and coming up with ways to solve problems on a shoestring budget is super fun, right?
Well, that’s what an Engineer does. It’s EXCITING!
A CTO plans for the future. Creates a vision for engineers to follow, and works out strategies for the product to develop for the changing market. Manages a team to get things done.
Pretty BORING, right?
You need to determine what exactly is causing your boredom. Is it that you aren’t passionate about the project itself? Do you not like the role of a CTO? Its ok if you don’t – some people prefer to be the “Doer” rather than the “planner.” While it’s true that the technical cofounder of an early stage startup needs to “do” stuff, a CTO has a lot of manager-y type responsibilities that simply aren’t “fun” or “exciting”, and if you aren’t interested in that, then you’re better off being an engineer somewhere (or finding a coach like myself to help you find out why you aren’t interested and change that.)
