I actually urge you to read Douglas Tarlow‘s excellent answer to this question.
The only thing I would have to add (or stress) about crowdfunding is that it isn’t an easy way to gain money quickly if you don’t know what you are doing and have no contacts.
You need to have a huge list of target backers already before you even start. You need to be able to put a lot of time and effort into marketing.
And it is all about salesmanship.
If you can strike an emotional chord with people, you will do well, but they still have to know you exist. For that you spend a long time preparing for the campaign.
