This varies greatly on who you are asking.
If you ask this question of most of the CEO’s, random bosses, friends and family members I’ve ever had, their answer would likely be:
“I ask Heather.”
Since you asked me, I can tell you that I read extensively to stay aware of current and be able to predict future trends (in business, software, etc). When I need to create a comparative analysis, I am meticulous about trialing first-hand each feature/product/experience/etc wherever possible before I take into account any outside testimonials or reviews.
I create a matrix of features that can be addressed in binary form – so that when I make a recommendation I can simply go down the list and say “Which items are important to you?” without inserting any bias.
So, basically, it’s a byproduct of who I am and how I live my life that I will always be able to tell you which software or service or vendor to use for your startup. I suspect there are other people out there like me that help other startups.
