Being a mom.
I don’t have a child and will never have one.
I have nieces and nephews, have friends and family with children, and I’ve been a babysitter, as well as taught classes in elementary and secondary schools, so I know what it is like to be around children in different settings for varying lengths of time.
However I have not (and will not) given birth, nor will I have a child who depends on me for their upbringing.
For those of you who do, I can empathize, but I’ll only ever be able to sympathize partially (I do have pets who depend on me to bring them food – which both worries and annoys me. My last cats figured out how to feed themselves by this age, so I’m worried there’s something defective with this batch…)
Anyway, I won’t and can’t know what it’s like for moms, the unbelievable joy and unbearable sadness that goes with having children they keep telling me about.
Instead, I have my life, in which I am perfectly content.
