Well, there is a distinction that needs to be made between the stated reason and the motivation behind it, because they are often not the same thing.
In fact, for me it never is.
In one case, I quit a position that I’d held for years to go to a company that I knew wasn’t entirely stable for the stated reason of:
“I miss being in the game industry.”
The internal reality was:
“I am in a dead-end job and can’t bear to be here another day in this soul-sucking nightmare.”
Another time, I quit a job with the stated reason of:
“My husband is moving and I need to follow him, cuz relationships.”
Internal reason:
He’d already moved. I was very distracted by it and had to decide whether or not to follow.
Curiously, a few years later, my husband quit his dream job with the stated (and internal) reason of:
“I miss my wife. I quit.”
He was an airline pilot and he was away too much.
Joke’s on him though – as a speaker and trainer, I’m on the road a lot to go into companies and do workshops 🙂
