I was always given the rule of thumb:
Dress “one better” than the company you are visiting.
Psychologically, this is to even the paying field (as they have the superior position of the “home field advantage”) but it also means that if you are going to a tshirt and jeans company, then for a man its always going to be about the suit – and your only differences will be jacket on/off and tie or no tie.
As a woman, I have to make to call on makeup/no makeup, dress/suit.
It’s very taxing sometimes 😉
When people visit me in my own company though, i wear what I want – it’s up to the consultants coming in to play the “what do I wear” game.
