For my company, it isn’t money, it’s time. I personally have probably spent under $500 on marketing tools, but have spent hundreds of hours writing, publishing, giving interviews and speaking.
Our site is pretty consistently ranked “high” for our business type. It fluctuates exactly where depending on what events we are doing, or any articles we might have written somewhere.
It’s not about SEO for us, it’s about building trust.
We don’t want new any new clients unless they are willing to do whatever it takes to become their best selves. That message attracts people to our site, often to book a scoping call.
