Absolutely.
The movie “Lost in Translation” illustrates this beautifully (and my husband and I have been debating the point ever since seeing it years ago.)
Basically, two married people in the movie develop an extremely strong emotional connection to people who are not their spouses.
They share every intimate detail of their lives. Have lots of amazing experiences together – but not on a physical level.
And then, the male character then has sex with a prostitute.
The female with which he is having this emotional affair finds out and is heartbroken. Why? Aren’t they just friends?
No.
Emotional connections are much stronger than physical. Emotion + physical intimacy is the holy grail of relationships.
Physical indiscretions can be overcome.
Emotional affairs are what will break up couples permanently.
Just for completion’s sake, my husband’s perspective is that the only “affair” part of the movie is the encounter with the prostitute.
