While living in Mexico, my community of expats would celebrate a combined Canadian/US Thanksgiving every year. Everyone had to produce a non-Mexicanized, truly North-of-the-Border holiday side dish.
One year, I was assigned to make a dish with Brussels Sprouts. I thought these were going to be easy to procure, as the produce in Mexico is amazing. After traveling to every farmer’s market and all 15 grocery stores, I could not find Brussels Sprouts anywhere. Finally, I asked a local restaurant owner where I could find them, and he said “Oh, yeah, you get them over at the Walmart, in the freezer.”
There’s nothing more American than frozen Brussels Sprouts from Walmart, right?
