When I was in college, my boyfriend planned a beautiful evening out at my favorite location, the Cornell Observatory.
March 7, 1997 was a gorgeous clear winter night. There was snow on the ground and the stars (and some planets) were visible against the vast sky.
Many people were there to view it.
After my turn at the giant telescope, I looked for my boyfriend and he was nowhere to be seen.
I called his name, and a person near me said “I think that’s him, down there.”
I looked over the railing and sure enough, he was on one knee, in the snow, with a heart drawn around him.
I started to cry.
People started cheering me on as I ran down to him.
They couldn’t hear the words as he described our relationship and our love and future life, but a raucous cheer erupted when he got up and kissed me while putting the ring on my finger.
At that moment it started to snow – very lightly.
It was probably the most romantic moment in my life up to that point.
It’s certainly in the top 5, still.
