Within the next 5 years, we should see the first version of the HyperLoop, a new concept class of Supersonic planes, and more cities adopting lanes for higher-speed autonomous vehicles. Google is working to cover even the remotest parts of the world with high-speed Internet access.
With those advances, the world will become even smaller, as commute times will shorten and borders will become increasingly less important.
World powers are already preparing for this by making it easier for people to get through customs and immigration lines with little to no wait. Uber and AirBNB await at nearly every port.
I see more advances being made on this front – making transportation and travel frictionless across the globe.
Additionally, I see us moving closer to a world where we have augmented reality as part of our every day life, however I don’t see the broadband capabilities having caught up enough in 5 years. Even if we manage to get the processing requirements and equipment costs low enough, there simply isn’t enough “internet” out there.
It will be like the switchover to autonomous cars – it won’t happen overnight. Someone out there will still be driving their VW Bus until that thing finally goes to the great music festival in the sky.
