In general, anyone who is in a CxO role of any kind is responsible for the long-term vision and ensuring that the resources are in place in order for that to be enacted. They are the “outside” face of a department.

Someone in an Architect-type role is responsible for the day to day implementation of that vision. They are the “inside” face of the department to the staff.

Have you ever heard a song and found yourself suddenly transported to another time?

How about when you catch a bit of a certain scent in the air – have you felt a shift in yourself as you submit to a memory that has been unexpectedly unlocked?

Your whole body – muscles, senses and your brain – have locked in different “memories” of your son, and you will continue to experience him throughout your life – if you choose to.

We can easily ignore and tamp down these little emotional road trips and reminiscences, and if we get good enough at ignoring them we won’t even notice them when they happen anymore.

But…

They’re still there.

Whenever I smell those spices unique to apple cider it takes me back to Christmas caroling in the snow with my grandfather as a young child.

When I hear U2’s “All I Want is You”, I am instantly back in my high school sweetheart’s car, being driven home from our first date over 20 years ago.

Part of the joy in life is in the discovering and savoring – it’s kind of like your son is playing hide and seek, just waiting to say “hi! I love you” before hiding again.
