Perhaps the question would be better framed as “What benefits do employees most value when working for a company?” as I am sure women are not alone in their desire to have a great workplace culture.
Growth Potential – If there is no room for advancement or growth in the company, your employees will stagnate.
Mentorship – Solid orientation and ongoing peer mentorships go a long way to instil a company’s culture.
Autonomy – Most people hate being micromanaged, so creating an environment where the employee is trusted is key.
A Cool Office – This one seems almost too simple, but if you like where you work, you’ll like going to work.
Flexibility – It’s been said before, but if your job allows it (like many engineers) you should be able to work from home sometimes if you need to, or come in at different shifts. This doesn’t work for every job, but it goes back to Autonomy.
Focus on Wellness – Have an awesome health plan. Encourage employees to go to the gym with memberships. Offer massage days, and yoga classes. Encourage family nights. If your employees know you care about them and their family, they will be more loyal to you.
BYOD – Let people use their own devices, subject to your own security policies and procedures. I can’t tell you how much this one means to poeple that they don’t have to carry around two phones, two laptops, two etc.
If you offer all of those things, you’ll have awesome candidates – not just female engineers.
