I suppose I never thought of myself as thick-skinned, however I definitely have an automatic mechanism to deal with this sort of thing.
Basically, whenever I notice someone is saying something overtly negative toward me, I *ignore* them.
I simply let them talk.
For as long as they want.
I don’t engage.
Or, if I do, I’ll join in, with some self-deprecating humor that is way better and more biting than anything they can come up with. After all, I know me way better than they do, so who better to point out my flaws and shortcomings?
And the cherry on top is this:
I will say:
“Ok.”
This drives people absolutely bonkers.
To whatever statement they are making. I simply am acknowledging that they are being heard.
When someone is trying to get a rise out of me, or garner any type of reaction, being endlessly “Ok “d”, ignored or one-uped makes them run out of steam pretty effing quick.
My secret as to how I don’t let things actually affect me? Not gonna lie, some things do hurt – they really really do. The best way I have found is to handle it as quickly and calmly as possible so you can go process those emotions, though.
