The more you know, the better your chances.

Assume you “ve only got a few seconds with a person – what can you do can you guarantee that you “ll make them want to turn that into minutes, or longer?

If you can drop a line about their alma mater, their country club, their favorite hobby – something – this will buy you time, and you just have to keep it going. This is called building rapport, and its an important part of successful networking (including fundraising.)

Mortifying.

While I’ve had my share of mishaps on the stage, the worst “wardrobe malfunction” I’ve ever suffered was while ziplining.

My extremely talented photographer cousin-in-law was capturing all of us coming across a canyon, when I got tangled up in the wires and stuck halfway. With my NSFW bits exposed.

He was kind enough to tell me to cover up as surreptitiously as he could before anyone else noticed while he simultaneously deleted my pictures off the card.

I was totally embarrassed, but really, what are you going to do but stuff everything back into place and get on with it.

It definitely beat my sister’s wig-falling-off malfunction in Sweeney Todd, for sure!

You are coming from a false premise that it is somehow wrong to feel multiple emotions at the same time.

The key to your question is the word “genuine.” In order to be genuine for your friends, you have to admit that there is some other emotion in there, and find out what it is. You can then work on that for yourself.

I’d bet that if you were honest with your friends about your full range of emotions that they’d even be supportive of you and help you achieve whatever it is you are lacking – because that is what friends do.

So, ask yourself these things, honestly:

Do you support your friends?
Are you there for them when they need you?
Are you proud of them for their accomplishments?
What are your goals?
What can you do to achieve them?
Will your friends support you in doing this?

Only you can determine these answers – but they should help you figure out where you lie on the happiness scale.
